The essential idea

Study adlerian practice through a model-specific formulation, an evolving fictional case, and applied decisions. Use the worked example before attempting the original practice task and separate case quiz.

BUILD THE REASONING · 01

Belonging, striving, and private conclusions

Adlerian individual psychology views the person holistically and in social context. Behavior is understood as purposeful movement toward an imagined goal, though the person may not consciously plan that purpose. Lifestyle refers to an organizing pattern of beliefs, goals, and ways of relating, not fashion or a checklist of habits.

Private logic is the person’s idiosyncratic conclusion about self, others, and what is necessary to belong: “If I am ordinary, I disappear.” Inferiority feelings can motivate learning; a rigid goal of superiority or avoidance may instead preserve discouragement. Social interest concerns connectedness and participation in a shared world, not self-erasure or pleasing everyone.

BUILD THE REASONING · 02

Relationship, assessment, insight, reorientation

Build a cooperative relationship, then explore present concerns, family constellation, early recollections, strengths, and life tasks such as work, friendship, and intimacy. Recollections are useful for current meaning and themes, not forensic proof of childhood events. Birth order offers questions about experience, not fixed predictions.

Offer a tentative lifestyle formulation, check it, and use encouragement to support a more flexible experiment. Encouragement highlights effort, capacity, contribution, and belonging; praise can make worth contingent on the therapist’s approval. Reorientation tests a new way of acting, such as participating without being the best, then reviews what the client learned.

ReorientationTake a modest shared roleTest whether connection requires superiority.

BUILD THE REASONING · 03

Do not interpret social context out of the case

Belonging is shaped by exclusion and unequal resources. A client may avoid a group because it is discriminatory, not because private logic is mistaken. Contribution must be defined collaboratively and may include receiving support, resting, or protecting boundaries.

The model’s foundational books and training sources describe its rationale and process, but do not establish one uniform evidence base for every Adlerian application. Evaluate the specific intervention and population. Do not treat a compelling early memory or family position as causal proof.

FROM CONCEPT TO DECISION

Iris: only first place counts

FICTIONAL CASE

Iris, 21, excels academically but avoids collaborative projects unless she can lead. She recalls being noticed mainly for awards and says equal membership feels like invisibility. A recent friendly group invited her to join without leading.

  1. Assess meaning

Achievement may serve a goal of securing belonging; the memory is a meaning source, not proof of causation.

“What would it mean about your place if you contributed without being the standout?”
  2. Offer a tentative private rule

Iris recognizes “I count only if I am exceptional,” but also values shared learning.

“Could that rule have helped you gain recognition and now be making ordinary connection harder?”
  3. Reorient with encouragement

She chooses one bounded supporting role and records whether participation and connection occur without leadership.

“The experiment is about courage to participate, not earning my approval for doing it perfectly.”
What the case shows

A new social experience tests the rule. If the group excludes her, revise the environmental account rather than declaring the experiment successful by definition.
